Mage Guide

The Mage Class is a damage dealing (aka DPS) Magic Class.

As a damage, ranged magic class they are the most "Fragile" class in the game. Many new players who start out as a mage get frustrated especially in PVP early on as many times you'll die before you can even get a spell off.

While later on with talents you can choose to increase this survivability. However, you're still a high damage dealing magic class which makes you fragile no matter what.

At the same time, dishing out lots of damage can be the most fun you have in the game. I personally prefer the Mage class because of this, making "2 shotting" people extremely fun.

Mages usually prefer to stay within the same talent tree's either going mostly full Arcane, Fire or Frost (the most popular by far).

  • Arcane - Single Target DPS through arcane spells. This used to be pretty much limited to "Raiders" however, with the addition of a new spell called Arcane Barrage, Arcane is quickly becoming the "PVP" build of choice for many (Arcane Barrage is an instant spell, with only a 3 second cooldown and does comparable damage to the same rank fireball/frostbolt!)

  • Fire - Again, this used to be mostly used by "Raiders" or many people combined Arcane with Fire up to Pyroblast which were called "POM/PYRO" Mage. POM stands for Presence of Mind which made your next spell instant cast, and Pyroblast which is a high damage Fire spell which has a 6 second cast time.

Put these together and you can instantly deal 5k+ dmg in a single blast at level 70. On top of that the "Ignite" talent you can get in the fire tree made your critical hits do another 40% of the damage you just did over the next 4 seconds, so you can literally do 7-8K+ dmg at level 70 with about +800 Spell Dmg. With the new talents in WOLTK and the added talent points, getting arcane barrage and POM/PYRO is very lethal.

  • Frost - Probably the most widly specced, The preferred AOE Grinding spec. Frost gives you access to certain spells like Ice Barrier that protects you from damage increasing your survivability. Also you can get a "Pet" which you can instantly summon every 3 minutes.

The most notable spell in this tree is "Shatter" which gives you a 50% increased Critical strike chance on frozen targets, freezing someone then spamming (repeatedly clicking) "Ice Lance" can do a ton of damage very fast. While this spec is the most popular and lets you survive longer, it's just not as fun as Fire or Arcane to me.

I highly recommend Fire or Frost for leveling (and PVP) to start off with. The later levels will decide on if you PVP or PVE and what is most fun to you.

SUBSCRIBER RECOMMENDED! -- Best Leveling In Game Addon and Guide

There's lots of guides out there on WoW.

But, there's only ONE everyone agrees is the most complete, comprehensive guide and that's the Ultimate World of Warcraft Guide.

Want To Level 1-80 In Record Time?
Not problem with the In game leveling system designed to let you practically level in your sleep. The in-game system is so revolutionary, it shows you exactly where to go, what to kill, and where to turn in your quests with an arrow and location tracker all inside the game!

I was blown away when I first used the in game quest system.

I used to spend half the time playing alt-tabbed out trying to find directions and coordinates to where the quest objective was, or where a person was located in the world to turn a quest it. No more with the Ultimate World Of Warcraft Guide!

I completed 5 quests in the time it normally took to complete 2 and finally finished the quests I didn't feel like figuring out where to go before, I won't play without it anymore!
