Paladin Guide
The Paladin Class is a Hybrid Class. Which means they can be a "Jack of all Trades" or more specialized in DPS, Healing or Tanking.
With the release of the WOTLK expansion Paladins got some nice DPS upgrades making the Retribution talent tree much better for DPS.
Before The Burning Crusade Expansion the term Paladin or "Pally" and DPS was a laughable idea because the only real DPS ability was Seal of Command, which had its "Proc Rate" (the rate at which it causes the ability to happen) was constantly changed from patch to patch.
But with Burning Crusade, "Crusader Strike" was added as a retribution talent. Crusader Strike is an instant damage attack with a 6 second cooldown.

This attack alone added a lot of DPS to Paladins because it does 110% weapon damage and with a big 2H weapon with a big damage range you can hit for some big numbers like a Warriors instant attacks can.
With WOTLK there's just so much good stuff in the Ret tree for Paladins, many people are now claiming the Paladin is "OP" Overpowered because of these.
So, let's take a look at the talent trees.
Holy
The Holy tree is the Healing tree. It's a good second choice for any build if you've spent all the points you want in another tree or want to be an "end game" healer.
I never found healing as a Paladin much fun, you really just spam Flash of Light over and over which was not really exciting for me personally in raids. Also if you want to be a pain in the butt in Battlegrounds, get 2 holy paladins on a team and stay together, you're pretty unstoppable.
Protection
This is the Paladins Tanking Tree. If you want to use a 1 hander with shield (sword and board) and tank instances this is the build for you. Paladins are probably the best AOE tanks because of Consecration.
Retribution
This is the Paladin DPS Tree. Usually you use a huge 2hander with this build but you can use a 1h and shield if you want the extra armor. Retribution is definitely the fastest for leveling. The other trees don't give you the DPS you need to kill things quickly. Once you get Seal of Command you'll notice your leveling speed increases dramatically.
Bottom Line:
Go Retribution to level, it will save you a lot of headaches. I know once leveling gets slow I tend to play another character, the retribution tree helps this a lot.
If you're a gear head and want the best gear, first always look for a better weapon since this is your source of damage and you can heal yourself a better weapon will speed up leveling a lot.
Don't forget, the Paladin is a utility class that has many neat tricks up their sleeves like Hand of freedom (immune to stun & slow affects), Divine Shield, Cleanse, Lay on Hands and a few others separate this class for all others in unique ways.
